Chicks With Picks
This page is dedicated to the Women of Rock; showcasing them through pix, interviews, reviews of albums & concerts.
June 20, 2004
We would be remiss if we didn't begin this page with a comment on last nite's edition of Headbangers Ball, a show dedicated to "rock's better looking half".

All-female rock band Kittie hosted the show in the absence of Jamey Jasta.

The group went on to plug their forthcoming album  Into the Darkness as well as show videos from other female artists such as Doro Pesch, Lita Ford, and Wendy O. Williams.

They also showed vids from female bands or bands with female members such as L7, Vixen, Crisis, Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, and Kittie.

It was an interesting show and great for HBB to give the females a show in the male-dominated rock world. --

My Experience Seeing Kittie
July 10, 2004
On July 7th, I saw the band Kittie for the first time. Since our page is about opinions, let me just say how cool it was seeing women moshing, crowd surfing, and playing metal just as good as the men.

Mercedes, Morgan, Lisa and my new hero Jennifer Arroyo can truly kick ass musically.

I was pleasantly suprised by their skill as well as Jennifer's awesome stage presence (more about her later).

It's great to see the girls rock out with the best of them and support Women In Rock.

Dislaimer: Allow us to clear something up for all of the naysayers who believe that women don't belong in this genre or the ones that are, do not take their roles seriously. I for one can say that the vast majority of the women in rock/metal right now do. Many women like Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy), Karyn Crisis (Crisis), Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Tarja Turunen (Nightwish), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Johanna DePierce (Amaran), Kristian Niemann (Therion), Rachel Rosen (Most Precious Blood)... These women are not fucking around busying themselves with trying to be sex symbols; they are legitimate, they are shrewd businesswomen whom possess talent not resting on the laurels of their feminine wiles.
The aforementioned are at the top rung of heavy hitters in the metal scene today or shall I say they are on a higher plain, a higher eschelon of artists to emerge on the scene than the ones with the normal sex kitten image. Grant it there are a lot of "posers" dare I use the word but we cannot account for all, there will always be those who will misuse and abuse the opportunites that are afforded to them.

Last but not least, for some strange reason being in the press, we tend to get a bad rap if we are seen with bands on our off time. Ever stop to think that we're just doing what people do normally...socialize? Wanting to TALK to the band?!? Or better yet, perhaps bands want to talk to us!  Believe it or not, I am here to report THEY ARE PEOPLE TOO, people who would like to be human and not always feel that they have to be "on" when they are not on stage. We ALL need our downtime and who better to conversate with than those with common ground?!?!

Okay, just wanted clear that nonsense up!

The Role Model For All Rock Females Karyn Crisis
!
Ok, I know I haven’t put anything on this board since Kittie so I feel bad but it was well worth the wait. We finally got to interview a female rocker that we can use as our site model. She is likable, intelligent and respectable, one that is very beautiful and hardcore: Karyn Crisis!

If I can steal the Fun Fearless Female title from one of my favorite rags
Cosmopolitan, Karyn would definitely take that title. On stage she is fearless, not taking any shit off anyone and destroying all in her path. Offstage, she is sweet, sincere, and her intelligence shines through. No dumb blond jokes here, she is the real deal.

Ever since I checked out her site and CRISIS' music I thought she was a genius. After talking to her, I know she can set the tone for many females who are look to be part of metal's elite. Karyn’s stage presence is mesmerizing, her vocals unbelievable. There is no Lita Ford or Vixen comparisons here she is far superior.

In our interview we talked about her childhood, when she took violin lessons and wanted to learn more dark and complicated pieces, she talked about her first band before CRISIS Mangle Dorothy as well as her other experiences with arsty bands in NY. When asked about her comment to the crowd (see Karma’s
review) she blushed and commented “we have to take up for ourselves”. She definitely shut that heckler up and managed to not be deterred from what she had to do. I commented on how bad I felt for the band since these fans were not ready for a band with a strong female. Lead guitarist Afzaal says “Ill Nino Fans will not stop CRISIS!”

Karyn is highly regarded by her fans as well as her bandmates who respect her and laud her as a goddess. Afzaal commented how they weren’t looking for a female like those mentioned above, but rather someone that could write and sing songs. Well I think they found the right one. If you don’t know about Karyn Crisis or about the band it’s not too late to get into them. Make sure to check out Karyn and CRISIS on tour with Kittie and Otep this fall!
