| Ozzfest 2004 Review Chicago |
| Ozzfest 2004 Tweeter Center Chicago Tinley Park, IL 8/22/04 by Karma E. Omowale "Heavy Metal Summer Camp" or at least that's how this Underground Grand Bazaar was viewed through the eyes of Buz McGrath, guitarist for Unearth and performers on the Second Stage. Click here for my in depth chat with Trevor, Mike & Keith (Every Time I Die). It was a rather interesting experience for the FourteenG staff to say the absolute VERY least! The day started off badly! For starters, we missed the entrance to I-80, then tried to get off at the next exit to catch the highway...suffice it say, we got LOST! And all set times were moved up by 10 minutes & scheduled and unscheduled interviews, we nearly missed the entire second stage. But for the parts I saw it was amazing. We arrived at the venue at the top of God Forbid's set. At least I had the chance to hear my favorite song "Force Fed" regardless of where I was enjoying it, from the parking lot no less (but then again, the Second Stage WAS in the parking lot!! By the time we were done checking in & etc. They were off. Wish there was more to report, but check out Sharita's interview with God Forbid here. Setlist Force Fed Anti Hero Better Days Broken Promise Unearth - Trevor and the boys rocked the crowd. His voice was strong, crisp even. A mini pit had formed, people were dancing and loudly singing along to the words of every song. The crowd seemed to be memerized by the twin guitar assault of Buz McGrath and Ken Susi. At one point during the song "Endless", Ken requested a girl, on a man's shoulders, to show her tits. Well I'd have to say it was unexpected and rather hysterical (and I'm a woman). Needless to say, the chic declined and dismounted her elevated perch. She chose to rock out to the rest of the set on the ground. They sounded tight and regimented. In talking with Mike later on in the evening, he disclosed that he consciously slowed the songs down. Not only because it worked better for him but that it made the songs more uniform and flowed better. Well, I couldn't agree with you more, Mike! Setlist This Lying World The Great Dividers Black Hearts Now Reign Endless My Heart Bleeds No Longer Every Time I Die - The one word that comes to mind is funky. They ROCKED!! This being my first time seeing Keith Buckley, lead singer, the rest of the band; I was very impressed. Keith quickly took command of the stage and never relinquished the reigns. The crowd was quite receptive. They are a fun band to watch! Vocally they remind me a lot of The Refused but Keith's vocals are better than Dennis Lyxzen's and the band can play! Check out a very candid interview with the band's guitarist, Andy Williams here. Setlist Floater Romeo A Go-Go Broadway 1-2-3 I've Been Gone A Long Time Ebolarama Lacuna Coil - Cristina Scabbi, female vocalist, and Andrea Ferro, male vocalist vocals blended well over the opena air. The band sounded phenomenal. Unfortunately a lot of small nuances were missed if they were to play in a closed area...but not much was missed. They more than made up for what was lost! Check out interview with Andrea here. Setlist Swamped Daylight Dancer Tight Rope Heaven's A Lie Dimmu Borgir - Over all I was not impressed with their set, which was no fault of their own. There were many outside factors contributing to the less than subpar performance: #1) I wished their were longer. #2) The sound could have been better. Silenoz's vocals were muffled but passable. #3) There were VERY few people in the pavillion at the time of their performance. Despite all of the surrounding issues, "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" was fantastic. Can't wait to see Dimmu in a better venue next go round. Hopefully it will not be in an open air situation! * Note * we have pix of the band from their 2007 tour, click HERE.
