“The Black, White, and Dead All Over Tour: A Force to Be Reckoned With!”

Setting: April 4th, 2005, Clearwater Theater in West Dundee, IL. Outburn Magazine presents God Forbid with Caliban in direct support, and in the opening slots there are It Dies Today and Full Blown Chaos. Later the tour was renamed to The Black, White, and Dead All Over Tour. This bill has it all for any fan of NWOAHM - God Forbid, ranging from the most intennse hardcore blood curdling screams to the most angelic vocal lines provided by the likes of Germany’s Caliban to the new wave of hardcore, It Dies Today, to straight up, good old fashioned hard-hitting NYHC, Full Blown Chaos. With the modest price tag of $15, how could one resist? This tour has to be the sleeper of the spring. Something had to be going on in order to make us travel well over 30 miles, crossing county lines to witness this unheralded event. It was more than worth it! We raise 5/5 horns in its honor!

Unfortunately, by the time we got the venue, Full Blown Chaos was going off. Almost seems like we are just not destined to see this band play for some reason. Despite the bad karma the cosmos is emitting, we shall catch this band in their full glory some day soon. They are ALWAYS touring, keeping true to their NYHC nature, hardworking. From what Sharita and I could hear, they sounded pretty good. The floor was active, again it is not as if the staff would allow a full-blown pit to erupt, god forbid someone gets injured in their establishment. Is this not why venues have insurance policies to begin with? Speaking of the venue, we will apologize in advance for picture quality due to bad lighting.

Lineup: Steve Lemke -  bass; Nicholas Brooks - vocals; Nick Mirusso - drums; Mike Hatalak - guitar; Chris Cappelli - guitar

Nick Brooks of It Dies Today (Photo: Karma E. Omowale)Fully submersed in the hardcore scene, Trustkill’s It Dies Today delivered a very credible performance to the more than receptive crowd. Forming in Buffalo in the summer of 2001, these lads will be touring extensively through the States as well as securing a spot on Ozzfest 2005 in which the band will be performing on the second stage! Quite a feat!! Their gothic infused and dark brooding music permeated the halls of the Clearwater Theater.

IDT’s performance got the kids to throwing horns and moshing wildly despite the ever-failing efforts of the security staff in which this pleased the band much. Singer, Nick Brooks defiantly made a mosh call to the pit during “Severed Ties Yield Severed Heads”. It was a remarkable sight, the fold happily reciprocated for a performance well done. Can’t wait to see these lads this summer on Ozzfest 2005.

Setlist: My Promise, A Threnody (For A Modern Romance), The Depravity Waltz, Severed Heads Yield Severed Heads, Sentiments of You, Freak Gasoline Fight Accident.

Lineup: Andy Dörner – Vocals; Denis Schmidt – Guitar / Vocals; Marc Gortz – Guitar; Marco Schaller – Bass; Patrick Grun – Drums

Andy Dörner of Caliban (Photo: Karma E. Omowale)I was really excited to finally be able to witness this German metalcore band. How would I surmise their set in a word? UNBELIEVABLE! I know I have used this phrase before but Caliban rocked my lame ass! Highly decorated vets back home, Caliban formed in the Ruhr region in ’97, however, this was the first time for many witnessing the band’s performance even though they have performed extensively throughout Europe. Unfortunately, the U.S. remains an untapped market for this band however, I am sure, Caliban will be a name that will cross the lips of a many of American before the close of the year!

To some this band may follow the cookie cutter formulae of metalcore: clean and death metal vocals with searing guitar parts and heavier than fuck rhythm sections however, this band does it right. How many times have this phrase been used? It is true I swear it is. In conjunction with singer’s, Andy Dörner soul felt screams, it’s guitarist’s Denis Schmidt’s backing vocals that seals the deal here folks! His deliverance is effortless as a matter of fact his voice translates live the same way as it does on CD, simply amazing. The band is in support of their latest release, The Opposite From Within speaking of CDs. With compliments like this, you would think the band was paying me or something! It's just that I can appreciate good music when I hear it and Caliban falls into that category. Dörner is quite the showman as well. He performs some pretty interesting acrobatics. He can kick his leg in the air to his forehead. Obviously, I was not the only person immensely enjoying their set; the audience was all about Caliban as well. Even God Forbid’s Byron Davis and Doc Coyle took a couple a minutes to show their support and take a gander.

Not sure when this band will hit the shores of the Americas again, but whenever they do make the trek back this way, make sure you will be attendance at one of their shows.

Setlist: I've Sold Myself, Forsaken Horizon, Stigmata, Vicious Circle, Beloved & the Hatred, Fire of Night, Goodbye.

Lineup: Byron Davis - vocals; Dallas Coyle - guitars; Doc Coyle - guitars; John Outcalt - bass; Corey Pierce - drums

The blazing guitar work of brothers Doc and Dallas Coyle filled the Clearwater Theater as the appreciative crowd attempted to build a mosh pit, which was stifled by the CWT security staff. You could hear in their melodious yet intensely heavy performance that this NJ band is definitely influenced by Swedish metal: Arch Enemy, At The Gates, In Flames, and Meshuggah yet their sound is infused with good old fashioned home grown U.S. metal bands like Pantera to Hatebreed. In which this band has toured with some pretty heavy hitters like Cradle of Filth, Opeth not to mention gracing the second stage on Ozzfest 2004.

The Coyle brothers’ angel like chorus well compliment lead singer Byron Davis’ screams and growls; John Outcalt and Corey Pierce round out the lineup as one of the most underrated rhythm sections in metal. Some of the songs performed were “Precious Lie”, “Better Days”, “Force Fed”, “Antihero”, “Broken Promise”, and a couple of new tunes "Chains of Humanity" and "Divinity" from their upcoming release IV: Constitution of Treason on Century Media Records in September 2005. The band turned in one hell of a performance tonight; surely, their audience tonight can concur. –- Sharita Lumpkin
