COLD Warms the Crowd for Sevendust
Oasis 160 – 5/4/04
by Karma E. Omowale

I must admit that I am a fan of Cold. This being my second time seeing Scooter Ward, lead singer and the boys, I would have to say I was COMPLETELY blown away.  This incarnation of the band seems tighter and more mature.  It is hard to believe that Cold is not a household name.  Scooter’s vocals were as powerful as ever the band warmed the crowd for Sevendust.  Scooter can ALWAYS stir and rile the masses with his emotionally charged lyrics.  His heart and soul is revealed with every note.

Cold’s music translates well from studio to live, which is a hard feat in today’s technologically advanced world.  Cold is the real deal!!!  Their sound is unique.  Mr. Ward has one of those unmistakable voices that you can pick out of a host of others.  Bottom line is, this man can sing his ass off and his band mates can PLAY!!  The rest of Cold lineup is: Jeremy Marshall, bass; Sam McCandless, drums; Kelly Hayes, guitar and Terry Balsamo.

Musically it breaks down like this: on the surface (lyrically speaking) Scooter is sad and pissed off at the world. He makes the world seems like a bleak place to dwell. Underneath it all, he speaks of his vulnerability and his fears. It is an honest portrayal of his life and the cards that life has dealt.  His lyrical mastery is especially displayed in “Cure My Tragedy (A Letter To God)” where he speaks about his sister who has cancer.   Scooter’s wonderful, droning vocals overlap potent melodies which sound…AMAZING!!  Without selling out/comprising their integrity; Cold’s refined style is more appealing to the masses.

As I have sung the praises of Scooter and his voice, I must give “ups” to the musical mastery which backs him.  Sam is an AWESOME power drummer who is not all about the hi-hat.  He is lays intricate beats with his cymbal work.  In a word MASTERFUL!!  Then there is the rich work of Jeremy…not to mention the fabulous riffs that emanate from Terry and Kelly!

My only complaint about was the sound was DEAFENING, which had nothing to do with Cold!  Oasis 160 cranked their settings to “open air arena” or perhaps they found monitors that go to ELEVEN!!  I temporarily lost the hearing in my left ear due to the blaring music.  But somehow with the music being as loud as it was, Cold still sounded great.

I nearly lost my mind when “It’s All Good” queued up.  I agree with Scooter, it
is...All Good!!  You need to catch these guys out, they are INTENSE!
