Lupara - Lupara EP
released 2005
Reviewer: Maggie Solum
Lupara is one brutal band. Their EP has three full-length tracks, an intro, a segue and an outro and that's all it takes. This band has one of the most solid sounds I have ever heard in metal, and they've been playing as independents so far, which makes it even more impressive. The CD starts out with "Dante's Scream", an eerie collaboration of percussion and stringed instruments which is a calming effect before the powerful, jumpy riffs of "Discrimination Pours".

Vocalist Craig Gross pulls the chaotic sound together with rumbling crooning that splits you down the middle and persuades you to head bang. In the middle of the song the guitars go into slow, heavy shreds that make the hair on your neck stand straight on end. Axemen Tom Brandner and Jeremy Wagner (ex-Broken Hope) clearly show off their skills in all three tracks, creating some of the catchiest, hardcore rhythms out there. Drummer Scott Creekmore and bassist Mark Page assemble the backbone of Lupara's sound with rib-shaking double-bass and heavy chords that support the battling guitars.

The EP's breaks are crazy and fit the band's "format" perfectly, they're mysterious and unique, but they cannot match the power of what this band really has. Honestly, when you think of a three-song EP you aren't exactly thinking it could be something to change the face of metal if it got loose, but after you witness Lupara, you won't be too sure anymore.
