Since the early 90's, South Carolina's Nile has helped to change and refine the face of brutal death metal as we know it today. We caught up with bassist Joe Payne and later guitarist Karl Sanders joins in the conversation during their current headlining tour named after their recent 2005 release Annihilation of the Wicked. Joe talks about his past, present and future as well as discussing the current tour, upcoming touring itinerary and more... Read on!

Karma: If I'm not mistaken you guys just toured overseas, Australia, was that your first trip over?

Joe: Yes, Australia, it was all of our first times there. So it was 10 days and Australia’s on the other side of the world from Europe and America and they’re starved for metal, they’re starved for all different kinds of music you know. It was just an amazing crowd with amazing people. They are so friendly! It’s like America with accents and they drive on the other side of the road. [Laughs] It was really amazing!

We’ve been touring for about two weeks now and after this tour we go to Japan! It will be my first time and George’s first time but for Nile as a band, it’s our second time. We’re looking forward to that.Joe Payne of Nile (Photo: Erika Kristen Watt)

Erika: How long is that for?

Joe: I think we have three shows with The Haunted and Exodus, so we’ll be there for a week; we’re looking forward to that it should be pretty fun!

Karma: I can imagine it would be!

Erika: What have you heard so far as far as the veterans are concerned who have already been there?

Joe: They told me that they treat a band like Nile like the Beatles over there. Well, maybe not so extreme but pretty close; more than what we’re used to. Like at the airport, there’s girls following you around and like they’re like fanatics over there, complete fanatics! I can’t wait. [Eyes brighten with a devilish glint and laughs] You eat at great restaurants everyday from what I hear, you have suites for hotels.

Karma: So tell us how has your experience been thus far with Nile?

Joe: Amazing, life changing definitely to say the least!

Karma: Whom were you playing with before Nile?

Joe: Nobody big. [Laughs] Some underground death metal bands, actually I met Nile, Dallas, especially, I’ve known him the longest because I played in another band with him back it South Carolina called Lecherous Nocturne. I recently left the band to really focus more on Nile and some of my other projects because that was not one of my personal bands. It’s just one that I wound up joining later. Yeah, so that’s how I know those guys I was also in Lust of Decay, pretty underground death metal but nothing too big or extreme. We play a fest every now and then.

Erika: So what are some solo things you are trying to do yourself since you do have other projects going on right now, correct?

Joe: Yes. I have kinda like my solo projects are just me and the drummer [Jordan Varela] and we have bassist right now [Dan Royer] but I’ll probably end up playing on the CD, it’s called Domination Through Impurity. I’m also doing another project with some old material I had laying around when I was like sixteen years old…which was just five years ago! [Laughter ensues] I’ve made some sounds on the drum machine and I let George [Kollias] hear it and he loved it! And so I’m like, “We don’t have a drummer and if you like it, we can put out a CD”. So he’s going to play drums on the CD for me. Some crazy metal, just something different.

Erika: Oh my god, that's so cool!

Karma: Do you have a name for the project yet?

Joe: Sudden Fear.

Karma: Ahh, Sudden Fear, nice!

Joe: [Smiles] Thanks. I think there's a band in New York called Sudden Fear but we’re gonna buy the trademark because it’s expired!

Group: Ahh! There you go!!

Joe: So hopefully we’ll buy it before they hear this!

Karma: Well you have at least three weeks minimum so you two better motor!

Joe: [Laughs] So that’s pretty much all I have going on right now.

Karma: What, like that's not enough?

Joe: [Laughs] Yeah, I know! I was in six bands, I ended up dropping two, I dropped Lust of Decay and Lecherous Nocturne, so now I’m down to four. [Chuckles] I love music, it’s all I do. Joe Payne of Nile (Photo: Erika Kristen Watt)

Erika: Do you write your music down…if you’re going in that many different directions, how do you remember all of the licks?

Joe: [Looks over at computer on the couch and grabs it] My laptop here! I just got a laptop for Christmas and I’ve been recording all the stuff on it.

Erika & Karma: Sweet!

Joe: You know I have my products teed, so it’s a little guitar processor, I plug in there, I have a drum machine on here. Everything I need I have, so… [Laughs]

Karma: Which program do you use?

Joe: [Pauses as a sheepish looks fills his countenance] Pirated versions of different ones! [We laugh] I don’t want to get into trouble.

Karma: Understood!

Joe: But I actually use Drumkit From Hell! I bought that one, so I can say that one. It’s a sample that Meshuggah did and they sold it. It’s amazing; it’s one of the best drum programs, drum samples.

Karma: Wow, never knew that!

Erika: No kidding!!

Joe: It’s really good stuff, it sounds really realistic just not good enough for me to put it out, that’s why I have George Kollias! [Laughs]

Joe: [Laughs hysterically] Oh that’s funny!

Karl Sanders walks in and has a seat…

Erika: So tell us your takes on your headlining tour, Karl.

Karl: I think of it like this, it’s our name at the top of the bill therefore, it’s our tour.

Erika: Well how do you feel about the other bands on the tour?

Karl: There are other bands on the bill? [Laughter ensues] Well I’ve been sick most of the tour so I really haven’t gotten to see much of the other bands. I’m just now getting over a terrible flu…

Group: Ohh!

Karl: …high fever and all of that which turned into a sinus infection, bronchitis…of course which was aggravated by the smokey cornucopia.

Erika: So we were talking to Joe about your upcoming tour in Japan, have you instilled any words of wisdom to him since you’ve been there before?

Karl: Well, the girls don’t necessarily speak too good of English but what do we need with English? All we have to say is, [mimics pointing at a crowd] “You, you, you”! That’s all you need!!

Karma & Erika: [Look of shock washes over our faces]

Karma: Now is that a plan you normally follow?

Karl Sanders of Nile (Photo: Erika Kristen Watt)

Karl: Oh yeah! They’re quite obedient!

Karma & Erika: [Gasps, horror replaces the shock]

Karl: [We all laugh] They sure are.

Joe: Did he just say what I thought he did?

Erika & Karma: Yup, he sure as hell did!

Erika: Well thanks for the mini update Karl!

Karl: You are welcome ladies!
