“The feelin’s gone babe…”

The night (for us) started with Boston’s Diecast. Their set was riddled with songs off the latest CD, Internal Revolution. Of course, the older fans in the audience responded wildly to the one oldie they pulled out of the bag “Singled Out” off Day of Reckoning. Speaking of being singled out, there was one rogue fan in the audience that rocked harder than the rest singing EVERY word to EVERY song... Regardless what the masses think about the new album, if it is a little less exciting and rocking than previous ones, this one cat rocked out for the entire floor! Through his exuberance, he actually got a couple others going! Now on to the mighty Dust!!!

I have always been a huge fan of the band Sevendust. Ever since the days of the band’s self-titled album to Home, to Seasons; I continued to support the boys from Atlanta. Though they have been through a lot from the drug habits to the departure of co-founder Clint Lowery to the debacles with their former record companies, again, I have stuck with them like glue; and why wouldn’t I?

No one has ever matched their energy or heart. From past performances, you could see how much music and their fans meant the world to them even though they rarely traveled outside the United States to perform. Now unfortunately I feel that time has past them by.

Don’t get me wrong, the boys still have lots of energy and actually they look great physically but the music is not as crisp as it used to be. The guitar still roars on the new hits like “Deathstar”, “Driven”, “Clueless”, “Ugly”…but the old hits sounded completely flat like “Trust” and one of my faves, “Bitch.” Lajon labored through the words and that pep in his step seemed to have disappeared when singing the old hits. I’m sure he is tired of singing the old songs but he must realize that old fans like me, look for the old ones to get us excited, even though the new ones sound pretty good.

Oh how I long for the days when these same guys, (enter Clint, exit Sonny) were younger and really gave their fans a rousing show with heart, energy and precision. All the songs gave you a great feeling and you went home saying, “Wow, this is the most underrated band in the world!” This time I went home saying, “Man, they look good but they sound old and tired.”

I realize that fans of Sevendust will start to flood my email with hate and disgust but I am just calling it the way I see it. I missed Sevendust because of the reasons I just mentioned. I was looking for them to make me feel like I was when I saw them the first time, excited, giddy, and ready to see them again. Now, I still wouldn’t mind catching them but in the words of that famous blues tune; “The feelin’s gone babe…”
