Morbid Angel would open the night on this special tour of metal veterans. No opening bands proved to be a great formula so that the fans couldn't be late or go to the bar for extra drinks. Morbid is touring in support of their now one year old album Heretic off Earache Records.

Since 1983, Morbid Angel has been around brutalizing fans in the US and around the world since their debut release
Altars Of Madness. That album has been called revolutionary by death metal critics and fans alike and opened the door for other death metal bands to come to the forefront.

Legendary, guitarist, founder, and songwriter, Trey Azagthoth is one of metal's elite, even though he has not grabbed the headlines like a Dimebag Darrell or Zakk Wylde. Bassist/Vocalist Steve Tucker actually sang on the
Heretic album  but original vocalist David Vincent has rejoined the touring lineup. During their twenty-two year history, they've had three drummers with the latest being Pete Sandoval, one other vocalist besides David and Steve, named Jared Anderson, and three bassists, the aforementioned Tucker and Vincent and Dallas Ward. However, despite all the changes the band has continued to have a huge following all over the world.

Tonight, metal's most respected death metal band got the cheers from the young and old patrons throughout. The mosh pits might have been a little thin, but that didn't stop them from cranking out the hits. Unlike some of metals more popular groups, Morbid Angel performs a no frills or special gimmicks set, just pure metal from start to finish.  They proved to be the right group to set the stage for Soulfly.

Max Cavalera is one of metals best frontmen, he is also a pioneer in the metal community. Tonight's performance at the venue was one of the best I've seen in years. Touring in support of their latest album Prophecy as well as their new DVD The Song Remains Insane, guitarist Marc Rizzo really showed that he is one of the best unknown guitarists in metal. Drummer Joe Nunez and bass player Bobby Burns held the rhythm together for Max entourage.

In ou
r interview, Max mentioned that he wouldn't be able to play his beloved instrument, the berimbau, because his soundman lost the microphone. That however, didn't sour the nearly sold out crowd of old and young at the venue. Max would play songs from Prophecy including the title track, Porrada, Mars, Execution Style, and Living Sacrifice as well as Sepultura hits Dead Embryonic Cells and Arise.

Even a few friends and his son would join him on stage for some percussion. The crowd was a little overwhelming for the child though since he seemed to look perplexed as to what to do with his drum sticks. Max also invited son Ritchie to join him for their new song
Stay Strong, which is dedicated to his other son who was murdered and his beloved grandson Moses who passed away last year.

All and all a very good night for Max and a great night for Soulfly fans!
